Cape Town, South Africa

Knownas the Mother City of Africa, Cape Town is the second largest city inSouth Africa and most visited by tourist. Cape Town is famous for its harbour as well as its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point.


Table Mountain

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa.With spectacular views from the top and great panoramic views of thecity this mountain tops the list of places to see in South Africa. Forthose who can’t take the hike, they offer a 3min ride on a cablewayfrom top to bottom.  At the top you’ll find a restaurant, cablewaycocktail bar (which can be rented out for events) and other hikingactivities.

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

Situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart ofCape Town’s working harbour, the V&A Waterfront has become SouthAfrica’s most visited destination. Set against a backdrop ofmagnificent sea and mountain views, exciting shopping and entertainmentvenues are intermingled with imaginative office locations, world-classhotels and luxury apartments in the residential marina.

Robben Island
A short ferry trip from Cape Town takes you across Table Bay to RobbenIsland, where Nelson Mandela and many other anti-apartheid activistswere incarcerated. Visitors can ride around the island on an old prisonbus and peek inside Mandela’s cell.

Addo Elephant National Park
Elephant herds are easy to spot in this park which is also home toblack rhino, buffalo and antelopes. Nearby is the up market ShamwariGame Reserve, an award-winning conservation project, which haselephants, lions, leopards, rhino and buffalo.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

iSimangaliso (formerly Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park
This wilderness park a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the only place inthe world where hippos, crocodiles and sharks share the same lagoon. Italso has giant dunes, beaches and tropical reefs, with superbbirdwatching and diving.

Here you’ll find the Big Hole, hand-dug by eager diamond prospectors inKimberley’s glory days of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thenearby Visitors Centre includes a period reconstruction of the town anda well-stocked diamond vault

Apartheid Museums, Johannesburg
Johannesburg critically acclaimed Apartheid Museum tells the wholestory of pre-1994 South Africa, Soweto’s excellent Hector PietersonMuseum covers the 1976 student uprising and Constitutional Hill is onthe site of a notorious jail where many activists were detained.

Spring flowers in Namaqualand
The arid Namaqualand region explodes with color between mid-August andmid-September, when wild flowers burst into bloom, blanketing thelandscape. The West Coast National Park is one of the best places tosee the phenomenon.

Teaching in Africa 
If you decide you like South Africa and want to explore more of the amazing continent, travel North to Nigeria, Morocco or the Ivory Coast and try your hand at teaching or volunteering. You can still travel the continent on the weekends and summers.
